Title: extra-dimensional accordion playing using a surround sound system
Question: how can I use a surround sound system to amplify the extra-dimensional aspect of accordion playing?
The extra-dimensional aspect is described in my master research about three-dimensional movements of the accordion bellows and its effects on musical interpretations.
Sub-questions:
● Which set-up of microphones captures the three-dimensional movements of the accordion bellows best?
● Which position for the speakers most effectively conveys the extra-dimensional idea to an audience?
● Which impact does the amplification of the 3D accordion bellows have on an audience?
Methodology: The research consists of 2 phases in which a composition for accordion and electronics will be created. The electronics are in both cases a real-time derivation from the accordion part. To measure the impact of the amplification on an audience, I would like to present the 2 works in a discussion concert, asking the audience members about their impressions.
Creation of “Contrapunctus” (Kaat Vanhaverbeke)
Contrapunctus is a composition for extra-dimensional accordion and electronics. There are 3 channels paired with 6 speakers (serial) which surround the audience. Through MaxMSP different layers of polyphony are shifted in pitch and speed.
