Justin Bennett’s (*1964) widely ranging work is as rooted in the audiovisual and visual arts as it is in music. Justin Bennett produces (reworked) field recordings, drawings, performances, installations, audio walks, videos and essays. Recent work consists of thematic projects focussing on the role of the artist in urban development, the relationship of sound and memory and the history of psychiatry in relation to the occult use of technology. Machinefabriek is the alias of Rutger Zuydervelt. Rutger’s music combines elements of ambient, noise, minimalism, drone, field recordings and electro-acoustic experiments. His pieces can be heard as an attempt to create sonic environments for the listener to dwell in. Finding tension in texture, tone and timing, the result can be very minimalistic at first glance, but reveals itself upon closer listening. The devil is in the details. Rutger was born in 1978 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands) and now resides in Rotterdam. He started recording as Machinefabriek in 2004. After a series of self released cd-rs, his official debut Marijn was issued in 2006, with great critical acclaim. Since than, a solid stream of music was released on labels such as Type, Important, Home Normal, 12K, Entr’acte, Dekorder, Miasmah, Consouling Sounds, Experimedia and Staalplaat. Gareth Davis plays clarinet(s), the result of a somewhatimpulsive purchase whilst window shopping in Covent Garden, London, around ten years before the turn of the century. The serendipitous location of a rather wonderful (and equally important, rather cheap) second hand record shop less than 10m from the bus stop required for seven years of schooling, combined with delivering newspapers on a daily basis, lead to a somewhat eclectic, dusty and generally unclassified taste in music. The result, performances and recordings ranging from classical concerti, to newly written works by composers such as Bernhard Lang, Peter Ablinger, Toshio Hosokawa and Jonathan Harvey. Collaborations ranging from the vocal group Neue Vocalsolisten and the JACK string quartet to improvising musicians Frances-Marie Uitti and Elliott Sharp, experimental bands such as Oiseaux Tempete and Nadja and electronic artists Scanner and Machinefabriek. More info here.

The Royal Improvisers Orchestra (RIO) is an international free improvisation orchestra based in Amsterdam. It is one of the foremost representatives of the new generation of improvisers in the Netherlands. Over the past years RIO has collaborated with the London Improvisers Orchestra (LIO), Instant Composers Pool (ICP), Steve Beresford, Han Bennink, Phil Minton, Michael Moore, Wilbert de Joode, Ab Baars, Luc Ex and Frank Gratkowski, in such venues as BIMHUIS, Paard van Troje, LOOS and OT 301. RIO’s musicians have different types of expertise and a diversity of cultures and come from various genres including baroque music, punk rock, jazz and electronics. But they all share one thing: a passion for improvisation. All are equal.
