“Van Bergen - Van Kreij” , a brand new electro-acoustic duo in interdisciplinary
music. Both composer and improvisor they present solo & duo improvisations, results of the IOM-AIM
artistic research and performances of own compositions.
qb is a new concert series produced by Azimuth at Studio LOOS focusing on the development and
presentation of audiovisual works. Young composers and visual artists are given the opportunity to work
and experiment with multichannel audio and multiscreen video setups to investigate the idea of space in
a multimedial context. qb aims at establishing new relationships between the sonic and the visual realm
through artistic research practice stemming from other extensive research projects supported by LOOS
foundation such as IOM-AIM and Azimuth.
About
Since the end of 2013 Van Bergen and Van Kreij have an artistic dialogue and work together in the IOM-
AIM Research. IOM-AIM researches interactive computer music improvisation with as a starting point
improvisation defined as “an unstable and unpredictable activity” (Van Bergen). Van Bergen researches definitions, notions and concepts of musical improvisation and composition and
their relationship, communication, interaction, instability and transformation and discusses the outcomes
with Van Kreij. The role of Van Kreij in the research is the development of specialized software realizing
computer aided interaction for performance. This development can be described as an ongoing
refinement and implementation of a musical language and musical interaction. At the core of the system,
that can be described as a collection of agents, is the analysis of input and a variety of generative
processes that create distinct musical responses. Ultimately IOM-AIM should be an (software)
environment in which computers and humans cooperate, interact, communicate and generate.
Johan van Kreij (NL, electronics) is a musician, improvisor, composer, creator and teacher. Using
software and electronics he builds instruments and objects that he performs in various situations. This can be in the context of improvisation—solo or with other musicians— as well as music theatre and contemporary dance. He has long-running collaborations with musicians and artists, among others Marie Guilleray, Ted Stoffer, Frances Marie Uitti and Paul Koek. He teaches at the Institute of Sonology.
