LOOS artist subsidy success
In the month of August 7 LOOS artists have successfully received subsidies for their artistic research projects.
Leonie Roessler - experiment + research subsidy, 'Political Art Radio'
Two special episodes of Radio LOOS-Political Art Radio -from the City of Peace and Justice, The Hague - in which political topics are explored using. sound art, field recordings and interviews with radio makers, artists and policy makers.-1. Accessibility and legal equality of disabled people in Europe (physical barriers still in place, from buildings to public transport, as well as barriers in the field of education, etc.) -2. Serious disparity in human rights in modern Europe, possibly with a focus on anti-gay laws emerging in certain European countries.
Leonie wants to explore in depth the relationship between public auditoriums such as the radio and the voices that are or would rather not be heard. For the 2 episodes that will be made in connection with this research grant, she would like to speak with policy makers in the Netherlands, and at European level in Brussels. A big question she can't answer for herself (and will investigate) is why things like the size and shape of cucumbers can be standardized across Europe, while member states aren't even held legally accountable for basic human rights.
Christina Schönbach - experiment + research subsidy, 'Voice Noise Catalogue'
As a classical/opera singer I have a lot of experience with interpreting roles and characters within this genre. This research is intended to expand my personal improvisation vocabulary with a VOICE NOISE CATALOGUE: a reference book of characters in music that serves as the basis for a dialogue. This catalog also enables other collaborations in (musical) improvisation. Together Making music is about understanding each other's language. A categorized vocabulary can do this help out.
I want to gain knowledge about improvisation and musical syntax by studying contemporary music composers and voice improvisers, everyday and animal sounds, music literature and contemporary notation techniques. I then try to express characters and properties with different sounds images, with which I conduct dialogues and form relationships in musical improvisations. In sessions with Peter van Bergen I'm going to try out these sounds, classify and place them in a first draft of a catalog.
Elisabeth Lusche - experiment + research subsidy, 'Embodiment & Empowerment’
“EMBODIMENT and EMPOWERMENT” is an ongoing research project into embodied practice as a performance tool, with an emphasis on gender and trauma. She began this research in master’s studies, focusing specifically on how theatrical movement prescribed by a score can offer a window for developing performers to become more empowered in their physicalities, primarily in the work “ORCHESTER-FINALISTEN” by Karlheinz Stockhausen. Since then, however, Elisabeth has expanded this research to center around the question, “How can we nurture the body/music symbiosis?”
Many womxn are either told to take up less space or denied space at all. Many womxn face aggressive acts that violate the little space they might be afforded. We have heard the cries for human rights and racial justice of “I Can’t Breathe” for years, and now we are faced with a like- taking virus that attacks the life-giving respiratory system.
Petra Dolleman - experiment + research subsidy, 'Miniatures'
Miniatures is a research into how I can make short compositions with my own images (still or moving) in collaboration with musical performers who improvise. For myself I want to find out how I can draw and film with new digital techniques, preferably live with 1 or more musicians. The setting decor and light is important. In several 'jam sessions' I look for a common language focused on details. I will make some miniatures myself (image) and ask musicians to respond to them. The other way around is also possible. Inspiration: minimalism, repetition, beats, silence, word, melody and emotional objects.
Goal of Miniatures is to establish a close contact between different disciplines and arriving at a new language that can be performed on stage and recorded on the website.
My hope is that rough diamonds will come out of everyone's sleeve, which we can grind and present as series of miniatures. A sub-goal is to allow very diverse people to participate in this working method in the long term. It is about being able to show individuality and diversity. My personal inspiration is the Indian culture, where it is believed that every person has their own 'song'.
Cristiano Melli - Makersregeling subsidy, title 'DEVELOPING A CROSSMEDIA RELATION BETWEEN MUSICAL AND SCENIC COMPONENTS THROUGH A TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACH'
Cristiano: "It is clear that LOOS’s associated artists share an adventurous spirit, intriguing ideas and a high standard when it comes to performance, as well as an inventive approach to new technologies and their fruition into stage. The development of social media interaction and the exponential growth of digital possibilities requires from an artist a constant update in our practice. The questioning on how to merge these technologies into a coherent whole should be intrinsic to an artistic strategy. Mr Melli’s learning goals, which the Makersregeling grant would allow to be explored in more depth, can be summarized as:
The dramaturgical use of technology and social media in new crossmedia works;
How the constant development of new digital possibilities affects the creative process during the creation of a work;
The similarities and differences between a “social media layer” and acts in traditional opera;
Which strategies could be developed that bring at same time advertising through digital medium as well as an artistic content to the work itself;
To research how the independence of an Artwork’s online social media layer affects its conception and interdisciplinarity;
To research the use of radically new technologies (such as Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence), learning both its possibilities and how an artist can foresee and remain updated on their development and use by fellow creators;
The social impact in the student and artistic community of a hub of artists with intense ethnic diversity as well as non-heteronormative queer personalities;
To research and develop entrepreneurial funding strategies such as crowdfunding;
To develop this research into a future PhD in the field of Technology and Crossmedia Composition.
Danielle Davidson & Hans van der Maas - Makersregeling subsidy, title 'Vertrek’
“Learning with the help of the expertise available within LOOS in the field of electronics and connections, how combinations of connections and sound manipulation are efficiently taken care of can be made so that everything functions smoothly on stage during a performance” – and Daniëlle Davidson such as making recordings with Procreate, improving stage act using a director and make good recordings.
The experts with whom LOOS will collaborate are Cristiano Melli (director), Johan van Kreij
(recording technique), Luca Serafini (digital image processing) and Marco Torres Lunshof (electronics connections to the stage and sound manipulation).
The LOOS Residency program includes the use of Studio LOOS + high-quality facilities
such as a beamer, Meyer P.A., Soundcraft mixer, light installation.
