Studio LOOS Closes as a Physical Space in the DCR
After 20 years of active operations of the artistic project 'Studio LOOS as a physical space in the DCR', with a mixture of sadness and gratitude, we announce that it has been decided to discontinue the operation of Studio LOOS in the DCR as of 1 February 2025.
The LOOS as a Physical Space in the DCR project enabled LOOS ( founded in 1982) to play an extended role in the world of interdisciplinary experimental music in The Hague and internationally, by facilitating and presenting many new makers and great artists.
Studio LOOS has been a special space for international young and established artists and experimental music enthusiasts, fostering values of curiosity and expression in interdisciplinary arts and performance. We thank everyone who participated in our concerts, residencies, research projects, workshops, festivals, and other events.
We also thank the longtime friends of LOOS. Those of you who attended concerts, were curious about the experimental music world and supported our artists.
Studio LOOS has always given performances and projects of high quality with state-of-the-art equipment. Being completely up to date with the most advanced audiovisual equipment. We are proud of the collection we have accumulated, and our artists can agree of the quality equipment hosted at Studio LOOS.
With the ceasing of Studio LOOS operations at the DCR, we are selling the equipment.
The professional high-quality audio and video facilities will be sold at reasonable prices. Examples include music stands, music studio chairs, the bar, kitchen equipment, refrigerators and the beautiful design furniture by Phillippe Starck, as well as various design/retro ceiling lights and set pieces.

why is the physical space closing?
At the same time LOOS has deliberately chosen not to apply for a structural subsidy from the municipality of The Hague starting from 2025. From 2004 until 2024, being structurally subsidized by the same municipality for twenty years, we are not continuing this anymore. An important reason is that the subsidies for Studio LOOS as a stage and organization for talent development, were too low to responsibly meet the administrative and regulatory burden and the substantial and financial requirements associated with the municipal subsidy.
On top of that, it proved impossible for LOOS to comply with all the codes that the cultural sector, including LOOS, has to deal with nowadays: Cultural Governance Code, Inclusion and Diversity Code and the Fair Practice/Fair Pay Code. The LOOS board has explained LOOS' decision in a letter to mayors and aldermen and the Hague City Council. The letter can be viewed here.
please note - LOOS attaches great value to a socially broad, full interpretation of inclusion and diversity where young and old can work together and there is also respect for the past and achievements. A one-sided focus means a destruction of cultural capital, it is time to abandon outdated discussions about age, skin color and gender, among others.
In addition, LOOS asked the municipality for some extra time to transition to independence from municipal subsidies, which was refused.
In order to continue LOOS/Studio LOOS/LOOS Channel and the website of loosdenhaag.com financially, LOOS is forced to ask for financial contributions from the public. For this purpose, please use the the button below. LOOS is very grateful in advance for your contribution.
We once again thank you for all those times in Studio LOOS at the DCR, the support over the years and for your love of experimental interdisciplinary music!
