‘Simple - Intricate’
by Tatiana Kolganova in collaboration with Giuliano Anzani and Marcus Graf
The artistic research ‘Simple-Intricate’ seeks to speculate on a way of communication that occurs at the fundamental level of our universe. The exploration is inspired by one of the principles of quantum mechanics — quantum entanglement. Quantum entanglement is a physical phenomenon in which two particles stay in strong correlation with each other. Once they get entangled, the particles cannot be described independently of each other. Even if they find themselves at a huge distance, the changes of one particle immediately influence the other particle. This way of micro-level communication that happens faster than the speed of light inspired the creation of a sonic environment based on this principle.
Though the quantum realm is not perceivable on the human scale, the physicist Dennis Gabor (1900-1979) proposed a way in which acoustical phenomena were considered by mathematical methods closely related to those of quantum theory. In his view, every sound is a composition of thousands of elementary particles or, by analogy to the quantum realm, of energy packages — quanta. The concept of acoustical quantum by
Dennis Gabor became a framework for this research that also expanded into experimentations with other approaches to microsound particles.
Within the research, artist Tatiana Kolganova is working with the programmers Giuliano Anzani and Marcus Graf. The work of the team aims to translate the principle of quantum entanglement into microsound composition.
The results converge into a live performance that creates an act of communication between sound particles through eight speakers operated by two performers (see the scheme below). Each of the performers generates sound particles that have their own entangled couple at a distance. The way how sound composition/communication will happen is unknown to the performers as they stand opposite, and play independently of each other. Nevertheless, they are involved in the creation of a sort of dialogue. The audience is invited to be inside of this sonic experience.
The experience intends to trigger the public imagination through the speculation on hidden intercourses that happen as a part of the universal existence.
